Mad Men
Best TV of 2008
A very convincing cast and costume design made this drama an entertaining watch. It raised some interesting questions regarding gender roles during the 1960s and made Don Draper a lovable rogue.

He’s our favourite baddie we hate to love. This show’s got fans waiting with baited breath for the third series. It’s still a cult programme and viewers still love it.

24
Best TV of 2008
Day Seven is nearly here and in the meantime we got a taste of it with 24: Redemption. The drama series continues to be as engaging as ever, unlike other dramas which seems to have lost their momentum (that’s you Prison Break – sorry, but I stopped caring a while ago).

Lost
Best TV of 2008
Considering the show poses more questions than answers, season four was especially gratifying. We met the freighter enemies and found out the identities of the Oceanic Six. Will they ever get home? Hopefully not, so the adventure can continue.

Brothers & Sisters
Best TV of 2008
The most under-rated show of 2008. This drama brought sentiment back to television. Sally Fields heads the cast with a faultless performance every time, and even Calista Flockhart’s not bad as the Senator’s wife (shock, horror). Hopefully, the third series will air at a decent time - we can only hope!

Secret Diary of a Call Girl
Best TV of 2008
On the surface, it’s just an excuse for gratuitous sex scenes, but when you continue watching there are some really impressive performances from Billie Piper and the rest of the cast. Funny and moving at times, the storyline is gripping and unpredictable – who would’ve thought there was so much to the life of a call girl?

Doctor Who

David Tennant brought the revived show back on track with an outstanding performance as the Time Lord. Speaking of outstanding performances, we loved Catherine Tate as Donna and Billie Piper reprising her role as Rose too.

The Inbetweeners
Best TV of 2008
One of those classic schoolboy comedies that provided laugh after laugh each episode – so much so that you were probably re-living it in the office the next day. The poor teenagers didn’t have a clue, but their hopeless ways were what provided us with the most entertainment.

The Wire
Best TV of 2008
There are many many cop shows on television right now but this one prides itself on a masterful script and some impressive acting. Another under-rated drama from the US which came to an end this year after just five seasons. TVGuide.co.uk users know better though, giving it one of the highest ratings on the website.

House
Best TV of 2008
Our very own Hugh Laurie continues to impress Stateside. Somehow, he manages to make a doctor that’s completely void of bedside manner into a loveable character. It’s still winning awards after five seasons so we’re clearly not the only ones who love this show.

The Big Bang Theory
Best TV of 2008
There’s nothing funnier than embellishing yourself in a world of geek heaven and quantum theory, with their anal obsessions with string light theory and their laughable but endearing attempts to woo the next-door neighbour. Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj have you laughing at them, but cheering for them at the same time!

Outnumbered
Best TV of 2008
The unscripted responses from the child actors is what makes this comedy unmissable. It’s that hilarious real-life scenario where the children end up saying what you’ve been thinking all along, but are too polite to say. A simple concept that creates big laughs.

Fantastic is a literary term that describes a quality of other literary genres, and in some cases is used as a genre in and of itself, although in this case it is often conflated with the Supernatural. The term was originated in the structuralist theory of critic Tzvetan Todorov in his work The Fantastic. He describes the fantastic as being a liminal state of the supernatural. A truly fantastic work is subtle and leaves the reader with a sense of confusion about the work about whether or not the phenomenon was real. Todorov compares this with two other ideas: The Uncanny, wherein the phenomenon turns out to have a rational explanation such as in the Gothic works of Ann Radcliffe; or the Marvellous, where there truly is a supernatural explanation for the phenomenon.
