Too much Dimbleby not enough depth. Part of the joy of history is learning something new or a different take on a well known story. This has neither. Might be useful to a first time visitor to the UK.

Unwatchable
Cannot bear to watch anything using this presenter. He comes across as patronising also, somehow unpatriotic and righteous for no good reason.

Episode 7 - Who was the medical artist?
I'm looking for the name of the female artist who produced works of surgeons at work in the segment of the programme on the formation of the NHS.

Pompous Dimbles
Patronising, pompous, supremely irritating, lightweight presentations like this are just boring. He's worse than his dad! Can't imagine what it cost to compile this trivial superfluous sideways glance at Britain. And the background music..... OMG! Another BBC dud.

Wouldnt it be great...
if this kind of program (inculding BBC2's Wonders of the Solar system etc) was on all the time and was the dominant thing on our telly instead of a rare treat. I wonder after 5 years of that would we improve as a nation? Would chavs cave in astart eating their own in frustration?

1st class TV
it's very hard to bring arts and history to the mass (and to a primetime show on BBC1), but David Dimbleby seems to be born for this. I've just bought the DVD and watch the very last episode before it aired and it's probably my favorite of them all. The series might be a bit too light in place, might not talk about Scotland enough (I didn't even noticed), but what do you expect? If you want to know more pick up a book or something. A TV series is supposed to inspire you to learn more. There's no way they can do everything in an hour. Having said this, the visuals are beautiful and everything about it seems to be just right: the sound, the music, the epic feel of it all. a real ***** job!!! Well done BBC.

Can it get any worse
Seen some of last nights show and was quite taken aback by its imperialistic tone, glorying in the "greatness" of the British empire. At one point he mentioned that various cultural items had "found" their way to Britain because of the empire, as if they just migrated there themselves instead of being pillaged and ransacked and stolen. Maybe in years to come this programme will be seen to be the last great production of anachronistic BBC history programmes. It belongs in Victorian Britain not the the 21st century.

And so ....?
This is an excellent programme, very watchable, very interesting. I am sorry about the negative comments from the so-called Celtic nations, but there you go. When they can dominate England and English culture, perhaps they could shout about it? very sore losers, on the football field, the rugby field and the battle field. Win once or twice and maybe we'll listen. Until then, crawl back into your Celtic holes and shutup!!

Why so much music?
Is it now impossible for Dimbleby to talk without background music? It never stopped!!

well made
Ok Like the comments below it is a history of England not britain and it does not go so in depth as people like simon Sharma (but it is going to be hard to sum up two hundred years in a hour program) - i think Mr Dimpleby does a very good job and for a person thats not a massive history buff like me its very good

Poorly Presented
This was well below the standard of presentation we expect os such series. Mr Dimpleby is well below par and lacks authority. Simon Sharma and the recent 'history' by Andrew Marr were much superior because of professional presentation. It was such a pity as the production values were well up to standard.

Seven Ages of England
Yet another Anglocentric view of "British" culture. Not surprising but disappointing in the extreme. Perhaps one day they will understand why this arrogance is so despised in the Celtic Fringe

brilliant
Dumbleby swanning around on a BBC jolly under the self delusion that he is wise and cultured. I know for a fact that you read these David, you are just posh scum.

Oh Dear Mr Dimbleby
Agree with another comment here, this as usual for "history of Britain" type programmes is actually a history of England and then later, I presume, a history of how England came to dominate Wales, Scotland and Ireland. When will the English ever learn, England is not Britain, and it most certainly is not the British Isles.

Where's the HISTORY?
With ref. to Edmund & Edward the Confessor, I should have said "Anglo-Saxon kings" - not "Kings of England"! Edmund reigned over East Anglia only.

Where's the HISTORY?
A parade of artifacts, largely devoid of context! Typical dumbing-down for a mass audience. No comment, for instance, this week (relating to Richard II's diptych) that Edmund and Edward the Confessor were not only Kings of England, but PATRON SAINTS as well.

A travesty !
Thousands of years of Brythonic culture dismissed in one line' Britain was a series of barbaric kingdoms until the Romans brought order. I thought the concept of all British art must be Anglo Saxon and Christian went out with the Victorians. Unbearablely flawed.

Dimbleby forgets Celtic nations as usual
Funny how all that beautiful and intricate pre-Anglo Saxon Celtic art was practically ignored. And I'm uneasy with the expression 'Roman England'. After all, England didn't exist in any shape or form during Roman occupation! Should have been called the 'Seven Ages of England'...
