Finally, some really Great Britain... These brief civilised episodes make you long for an extended version - maybe two or three stiched together. What a decent human Mr Portillo is and what a contrast to the insane ravings of, oh, I don't know, how about 'Mr Angry' see below...what a prize berk! Movie Lover7:36pm Wed 9 May

Awful distasteful, racist, virtually unwatchable for any self respecting human being. disgusting show. An Angry Watcher4:25pm Wed 25 Apr
Comprehensive I hope this programme is shown in schools - it covers gently so much - geog, history, economics, politics, social change and more. Thank you Mr P. Sadie12:08pm Wed 22 Feb
A Grand Day Out Tired of vacuous air-heads? Thumping background music, dizzy camera work and inane presenters who shout complete drivel at you? Welcome to a relaxing day out with Mr Portillo. Wonderful. Just wonderful. Sheila10:19am Wed 22 Feb
Michael Portillo Railway Journeys Another splendid series! We have learnt much about the Railways, the history, geography and industries affected by them. More please! From the music to the scenery, the commentary and the interest we have once again been delighted by this programme. Rosy Railway Fan4:25pm Tue 21 Feb

Training I love a good old train journey as much as the next recovering alcoholic, but this programme was rather tedious.

Enlightening! I never knew Britain was so boring! Choo Choo!7:00pm Thu 28 Jan
Sunday TV? Why is this scheduled for early weekday evening, it is supremely suited to the Sunday slot. As it is, I always end up seeing bits of it while cooking or eating, which is a pity, as it looks very pleasant, and I would like to be able to hear a little more of Michael Portillo's commentary. It is good to see him as a successful presenter, it means he won't be tempted to stand for Parliament again. Nottory6:46pm Tue 26 Jan
dreadful background noise A good programme spoilt by the awful noise that passes for background music Bryan6:54pm Mon 25 Jan
Ilike train journeys I love the countryside, can't get enough of it. Smudge2:46am Thu 21 Jan
What's up ducky! Well we all know what Michael Portillo is thinking about when a train goes in a tunnel. Gim6:38pm Tue 19 Jan
Nice scenery ruined by an oily 'presenter'. Don't believe everything you hear from Portillo, he's a 'politician' you know, so the truth is rarely in evidence.
The real reason the Settle-Carlisle line was kept open is because Thatcher's closure of the UK's coal mines meant that imported coal would be needed to fuel the coal-fired power stations in Yorkshire, and that meant transporting large quantities of coal from Clydeside, a task which is better done by rail than by road; witness the large number of freight trains hauling coal down the line today.
QED! Astaroth2:03am Mon 18 Jan
Background music!!! GREAT programme totally spoilt by that wretched music poor Michael drowned out at times. Jeniwren2:36pm Sat 16 Jan
A Quiet Little Gem Michael Portillo is a refreshingly low-key presenter who doesn't feel the need to 'perform' for the camera, letting the subject-matter speak for itself. Very interesting and informative - you don't even need to like trains to enjoy it. Marianne1:05pm Fri 15 Jan
Excellent Series Hello

well, this is what you find. when bosses take large wages and bonuses for many years, and let the train system fall into dissrepair through lack of investment. T.M.I.Iqbul10:19pm Sat 9 Jan
British Rail You know, we used to have a decent railway. And Britain used to be great. Now the closest you'll come is a packed and late Underground train. alex.w11:37pm Fri 8 Jan
